WHERE: The TEENSS Program is located at REACH Child Development Centre. The group is often out in the community and surrounding areas, exploring, engaging and having fun.

WHO: TEENSS participants are all youth with developmental disabilities.

WHY: This program allows parents to get a break and for participants to enjoy hanging out with their peers, going on outings, doing planned activities and having special guests.

Marko Dekovic, VP of Public Affairs at Global Container Terminals Canada, operating at Deltaport for over 20 years, explains why GCT sponsors this program: “We’re proud to be part of the Delta community and helping it REACH its full potential by sponsoring the GCT TEENSS, a very special program offered by REACH that supports the optimal development of vulnerable youth.”

With the permission of the parent/legal guardian, referrals to the program may come from a variety of sources, including parents, caregivers, and other professionals.

To be eligible for the Group Respite TEENSS Program, the family must live in the Delta or Surrey area. The child mus also be able to manage themselves safely and independently within a group of 3 children with 1 caregiver.  Within these criteria, the following guidelines are used to determine if a child is eligible for the group respite program:

  1. The child does not exhibit aggressive behaviours, physical, and/or verbal, to the extent to which it threatens the safety or security of the other participants or staff.
  2. The child’s behaviour is at a manageable level where he/she does not require one to one attention (eg. does not bolt/ run away or display destructive behaviour).
  3. The child is able to toilet themselves independently, without physical assistance.
  4. The child does not have issues with mobility that would require one to one assistance.
